Brittany, or Brittany in English, is a region in northwest France. The region lies on the northwest peninsula of continental Europe. To its north is the English Channel and to the west the Celtic Sea and Atlantic Ocean., with the Bay of Biscay to the south. The region’s biggest cities are Nantes, Rennes and Brest. Saint-Malo is a port for ferries from England. The modern region of Brittany contains about 80% of what constituted the historic province.
In ancient times the Brittany peninsula was the centre of megalithic constructions of Neolithic era. Although Christianization of the region might have taken place during the Roman rule of the area, the first recorded missionaries to the region came from Wales and are known as the Seven Founder Saints. Historically the region has links with Celtic Britain and the area is sometimes referred to as ‘little Britain, or lesser Britain’, as opposed to Great Britain.
