Situated on the banks of the Indre River in central France, Chateauroux is located 250km south of Paris. It is bordered to the west and south-west by the Brenne Regional Nature Park. With a population of about 47,000, Chateauroux is the capital of the Indre department in France’s Centre region, and the second largest city in the Berry province. The city was founded in the 10th century by princes from a neighbouring city.
Chateauroux’s most recognizable landmark dates from this era. The city developed around “Chateau Raoul,” a fortified castle located about 5km from the Kyriad Chateauroux Hotel. The castle changed hands between several royal families throughout the city’s history. Despite being burned during the Hundred Years War, Chateauroux saw a revival with the creation of textile and tobacco factories, and the introduction of railroad lines. The city is now home to many educational institutions.
