Toulouse, part of the Haute-Garonne department in the Midi-Pyrénées region, is the fourth largest city in France after Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Located in the south-west of the country, it has both the Canal du Midi and the river Garonne within its reach, creating a pleasant atmosphere with plenty of lush, surrounding greenery. Much of the city was destroyed during a huge fire in the 15th century, leading people to re-build their houses and other buildings in brick instead of wood. The earth used had an unusual pink colour, thus giving Toulouse its nickname of “ville rose” – the pink city.
Toulouse became wealthy through the growth of pastel, which was used to create a blue dye. This was much sought after in Europe until indigo was imported from India. Relics from this past glory can still be seen around the city, particularly through its architecture. Chic shops, great sights and the comfort of a bed at Hotel Kyriad Toulouse Centre – what more could you ask for?
