Poitiers is located in west-central France, situated on a promontory between the valleys of the Boivre and Clain Rivers. This city of about 90,000 is both the capital of the Vienne department and of the wider Poitou-Charentes region. Poitiers is one of the oldest cities in France, and has played an important role in French history. Pre-dating the Roman Empire, Poitiers’ illustrious past is marked by important battles, events and personalities.
After being a part of the Roman Empire, Poitiers fell into the hands of the Visigoths and then the Franks. In 732, Frankish and Burgundian troops defeated the army of the Umayyad Caliphate, in an area just 30 minutes from the Kyriad Poitiers South Hotel. The city was also the site of the Battle of Poitiers during the Hundred Years War, and in 1429, Joan of Arc faced an inquest in Poitiers.
