The Eiffel Tower is one of the most globally well-known landmarks ever, appearing as an icon representing France around the world. It was erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the World Fair and named after its designer, engineer Gustav Eiffel. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most visited paid structure in the world, with 7.1 million people ascending it in 2011.
The tower is 320 metres tall which is roughly equivalent to an 81-story building. When it was constructed it surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest structure in the world, and it held that title for the next 41 years. It eventually lost that title to the Chrysler Building which was built in 1930. It became taller than the Chrysler again, however, in 1957 when the antenna was added to the top of the tower.
