Mont Blanc, which means White Mountain, is the highest peak in the Alps mountain range and the highest in the European Union. It is ranked 11th in the world in terms of topographical prominence. It is also known as La Dame Blanche, French for The White Lady, and Il Bianco, Italian for The White One. The mountain lies in a range called the Graian Alps and is popular for mountaineering, skiing and hiking.
The first recorded ascent of Mont Blanc took place in August 1786. This climb is thought to mark the start of modern mountaineering. The summit is now ascended by an average of 20,000 mountaineer-tourists each year. Although it is quite a long climb, Mont Blanc is arguably a relatively easy climb for someone with mountaineering knowledge. Three towns surround the peak, Chamonix and St Gervais les Bains in France, and Courmayeur in Italy.
